The historic County Cork fishing town of Kinsale lies just 16 miles south of Cork and once held its own races in the early 1800s. The first meeting was staged at the Prehane course, some 2 ½ miles north-east of Kinsale overlooking the harbour, on Monday 30th June 1834 when over 2500 people attended, and was sponsored by the Gentlemen of Cork. Race meetings continued to be held on an annual basis until the final recorded meeting took place on Wednesday 23rd November 1870. |
